Translating GPN Pages

Hi, I'm Evelyne (the french one, not to be confused with Evelyn) aka arthuro555, and I'm working on making quality translations in English and French for the public GPN pages. I'm using this page to document the meaning behind my edits and track my progress.

Translation concept

Translations until now were a bit of a mix and match, different for every page depending on who wrote it. I'm editing pages to make them fit a consistent pattern.

Content Pages

Content pages are page displaying information to people.

Content pages should be localized into separate pages. This makes navigating the page easier, as one doesn't have skip over duplicate content in another language. By having content pages entirely in one's languages, the contents gets easier to read and give a feeling of inclusion for people speaking foreign languages.

This consistent scheme allows for

Easily linking to a version of the page in a specific language
- This, in turn, allows localized pages to link to versions of the page in the same language, allowing for a seamless navigation experience
Creating localization-aware templates to ease of translation and of edition of shared bits

Registry Pages

Registry or "Edit-Me" pages are meant for visitors to edit and communicate through. Because of their nature, it is unreasonable and goes against the point of these pages to try and keep multiple versions of these.

There should therefore only be a single version of the page, with an English name and content. English is the most accessible communication language and thus most suited for such websites.

Templates

I built a few translated templates to facilitate translating pages and editing shared bits between them.

Language Selection

To navigate to localized versions of content pages, the {{LanguageSelect}} template will help generate links to translated versions. It will look like this:

GPN23 Navigation

The GPN navigation {{Navigationsleiste_GPN23}} already existed previously, but I made localized versions, simply add /en or /fr at the end to get the localized version. For example, here is the English one:

Wiki account required tip

{{NoWikiAccount}} allows to insert a version on the tip displayed on the top of each Registry Page that's already localized in all 3 supported languages:

Translation Guidelines

Have Language Selection

Content pages should use the {{LanguageSelect}} template at the top, to allow selecting the language.

The template name should follow the localized page name:

It's no matter if the page doesn't have a version in both or either of the other languages - this serves as an indicator to help me notice and write translations, and for visitors to know there is no translation to look for yet (and that they're welcome to contribute one if they want).

The current German version is cannon

Although some translations already exist for older GPNs, some content is oftentimes outdated or no longer matches edits in the German version. When translating, it's therefore important to start off from the latest, canonical, German GPN23 version of the page. If some well written parts of older pages are still exact translation, then we can carry it over, but the old version should not be the default.

Localize page display name

Since we're using semantic URLs, the display name of the page ends up quite ugly and in the canonical German. We can specify a display name in order to make the localized page names make sense again.

German Pages

German page names should already be in German, and therefore should not be changed with a display name.

Pages in other languages

If applicable, translate the page name. Regardless, use a display name that removes the language suffix (/en & /fr):

Use localized Wiki Account tip

On Registry pages, {{NoWikiAccount}} should be present at the very top, which explains how to login in each language.

Use localized sorting name

Localized pages should have a sorting name with the language suffix (/en & /fr) at the front of the name instead of at the end, with {{DEFAULTSORT}}, for example:

GPN:safeR/en -> {{DEFAULTSORT:en/GPN:safeR}}

This allows to group pages in Kategorie:GPN23 by language code for a more pleasant overview

Use proper categories

Categories allow to keep a clear overview of which pages are part of the translation project, and for translators to check out pages which were translated in languages they know, to proofread them for example.

Pages in English should have [[Kategorie:English]].

Pages in French should have [[Kategorie:Französich]].

Use localized navigation

At the end of the page, the GPN navigation ({{Navigationsleiste_GPN23}}) corresponding to the language of the page should be present:
