Ausstellungsbeschreibung

Die Ausstellung »Open Codes. The Art of Coding« ist ein Einblick in neue kreative Prozesse, die sich für KünstlerInnen durch das Werkzeug »Code« ergeben. Die Werke zeigen praktische Anwendungen und formulieren dadurch eine Definition der neuen Kulturtechnik, die sich mit dem Werkzeug »Code« und Daten ergeben.

Gezeigt werden die Werke im OpenCodes-Labor im Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai. Zum Kala Ghoda Arts Festival, dem größten multikulturellen Festival des Landes, das jedes Jahr im Februar stattfindet, verwandelt das ZKM | Karlsruhe zusammen mit dem Karlsruher Entropia e.V. sowie lokalen KünstlerInnen und HackerInnen den Ausstellungsraum in ein multifunktionales Code- und Medienkunstlabor. Die Werke dienen auch als Inspiration für die vielen Workshops und Veranstaltungen, die in den Räumen stattfinden: TeilnehmerInnen könne eigene Kleidungsstücke mithilfe von Code besticken oder eigene Umweltsensoren mit Anbindung an Open Data-Datenbanken und -Netzwerke basteln.

Während der Gesamtlaufzeit des Festivals bauen alle anwesenden HackerInnen und KünstlerInnen zusammen an mehreren interaktiven Lichtskulpturen, die auf die Datenflüsse der Stadt oder Eingaben der BesucherInnen reagieren.

Friday 01.02

6:30pm - Opening of the exhibition 'OpenCodes. The Art of Coding', a collaboration between the Goethe-Institut / Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai, the ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, Germany, and the Entropia e.V. - Chaos Computer Club Karlsruhe.

Saturday 02.02

4pm - Light workshop with Rainer Kehres. During the Kala Ghoda Arts festival we will build n interactive light sculpture composed of many different lamps built at workshops during the festival. The Artist Rainer Kehres will support the participants in creating their personal lamp. Once completed, the lamp will be added to the outside sculpture. The entire sculpture is computer controlled and will be interactive. It is possible to pick of the lamps for personal use after the festival. Up to 15 Persons. Requires: lamps are build from scratch and household materials like cloth, plastic spoons or cups, straws etc. Registration: free. 7pm - First steps with augmented reality with Yasha Jain. In this hands one workshops participants will learn the basics step necessary to build their first augmented reality software. Participants will need to bring their own laptop, older Laptops might run into performance issues while using 3D-Software. Requires: decent laptop. Does not require any previous skills. Registration: free.

Air pollution is an everyday issues, especially in large cities such as Mumbai. With a few simple steps, no soldering or coding experience required, you can assemble your own air quality sensor. It will feed large OpenData databases and allow for more transparent and detailed understanding about pollution sources and spread. This workshop requires a INR 2,000 fee to cover parts of the material costs. Up to 15 Persons. Requires: Smarpthone, WiFi at home. Registration: INR 2,000 for the sensor.

Monday 04.02

6pm - Artist talk: TimeBlur. The artists at Timeblur Studio, a creative studio at the intersection of data, art and technology will present their project 'Stambh', a Sculpture art translated from the Kinetics of Yoga with technologies like Computer Vision, Image Processing and Creative Coding. 8pm - Movie: ALL CREATURES WELCOME (2018, 90min, German+English, with English subtitles). All Creatures Welcome sketches a utopian image of society in the digital era. Accompanied by the appeal to “use hacking as a mindset”, the viewers immerse themselves, together with the Filmmaker, in a documentary adventure game and explore the world of hackers and nerds.

Tuesday 05.02

6pm - Sublime encoded with Lívia Nolasco-Rózsás. How can programming languages a.k.a. code be turned to something beyond them? Just like painting or making music, writing code is a cultural technique, just a tool, which can be used to reach a certain quality of greatness. Programmers and artists have been using code for aesthetic experiments ever since computers are accessible, and with their overall presence the engagement with coding is constantly expanding. In her presentation Lívia Nolasco-Rózsás will contextualize the pieces of the Open Codes. 6pm - Artist talk with Vladan Joler, artist in the exhibition and professor at the New Media department of the University of Novi Sad and leader of SHARE Lab (labs.rs). The lecture Forensics of Exploitation: Anatomy of an AI System by prof. Vladan Joler from Novi Sad University covers the invisible matrix of human labour, energy consumption and resource extraction that is hidden behind digital networks and Artificial Intelligence. Specifically, it takes the home assistant Amazon Echo as a case study of black box technology and, step by step, reconstructs its design and the relations of each component with planetary ecology and economy. 8pm - Build your own air quality sensor with Simon Terzenbach. Saturday 09.02

4pm - Algorave workshop with Dhanya Philo and Algorave India. Bring your Laptop and learn how to create sounds, rhythms and music with code. 8pm - Algorave performance with various artists. An open source open door live performance sets of 6-8 data musicians and data visualists - live coding the fuzzy logic of the city. The audience moves around the performance consoles getting a closer look at the process while some audience can also influence the codes through the specially designed apps on their phones or other code triggers.
