1. Who is the CCC?

German version

The Chaos Computer Club is a global community that supports the freedom of information and communication without being censored by a government or an industry. Furthermore, it deals with the technologoical impact on society as a whole, and the individual being. Knowledge about these developments is in various ways encouraged, this has also been documented as the preamble of the association's statute. Members and allies of the CCC start projects on related topics which they pursue self-responsibly.

The CCC considers itself a platform for communication for Hackers and people who want to become one. Everyone with technical interests is adressed, though it doesn't stop there since risks and general impact of technology on society are investigated as well by the CCC.

Results of the CCC are published in collaboration with all media, on public events, on congresses and in political hearings, for example the Committee for Post Sevices and Telecommunication of the German parliament (Bundestag).

Allies of the CCC - members of the Chaos-Network - are among others, the Chaos Computer Club Berlin e.V., Suecrates Stuttgart, the 2600-Magazin New York, the FoeBuD e.V. Bielefeld, XS4ALL Amsterdam and the APC-Network.

2. History and Legends

In 1981 the CCC has been founded as a association of computer and media experts who discussed electronic ways of communication. Since 1984, it has been publishing the "Datenschleuder" and hosting the annual "Chaos Communication Congress". When the CCC gave voice to people testing the integrity of EDV-Systems in terms of data protection and data privacy, the association received a lot of attention from within the hacker scene.

The Chaos Computer Club became an officially registered association in Hamburg in 1986. The CCC connects an international network of members and many volunteers of any sex and gender who organise public meet-ups in differents locations, help with the press or host lectures or panel discussions.
