Tips for an accessible design of talks and workshops

  • For workshops of a manageable size, try to figure out if people with disabilities are present, and what kinds of accommodations they may need.
  • Guide: Make your PowerPoint presentations accessible to people with disabilities - Even if your OS and presentations software is different, these guidelines should be generic enough that they should still apply for the most part
  • Wikipedia: Web accessibility (Explains the main hindrances disabled people face on the web, and presents the basic methods to work against inaccessibility)
  • Accessibility Guidelines of the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C)
  • Put into words anything that you display on your slides, so that people who cannot see them may still follow whats happening.

Status-Quo of Accessibility @ GPN

If you want to help us to strategically establish an accessibility-minded Status-Quo, or have ideas about where how we should get started doing so, please contact us! :D

  • Wheelchair accessible building (Accessible toilets on ground floor and lift in the ZKM)
  • Recording of all Talks and upload in a timely manner on media.ccc.de

Current Work on improving Accessibility @ GPN

  • Optimisation of the presentation in information projectors for people with restricted sight
  • Planned infrastructure to add subtitles to recordings (Phase 1) and to real-time presentations (Phase 2), ultimately with live translation in other languages (Phase 3)
  • Looking for more people with disabilities (experts) who could help us improve accessibility and give us additional input.
